    Wrote poems ‘A Man Saw a Ball of Gold’ (1895), ‘In the Desert’ (1895) and ‘Do Not Weep Maiden, for War is Kind’ (1899)
    War correspondent in Greece, Cuba and Mexico
    He had thirteen older siblings.
    He was constantly sick as a child.
    He did not begin attending school until age nine.
    At college, he often skipped class to play baseball.
    He had an affair with a married woman at age 20.
    His short, cryptic poems, admired by later generations, were mocked by contemporary reviewers.
    He married the owner of a brothel, who didn’t bother to divorce her first husband beforehand.
    He is one of the first great American realists.
    He taught himself to read by age four.
    By age 16 he had articles published in ‘The New York Tribune.’
    He lived in the slums of New York to research his novels.
    His battle scenes in ‘The Red Badge of Courage’ were so accurate many mistook him for a civil war veteran.
    He lived much of his adult life broke.
    He was shipwrecked near Cuba and survived several days in a dinghy.
    Joseph Conrad wrote to him, ‘My ideas fade-yours come out as sharp as cameos.’
