    Republican Congressman from Minnesota (1943-1963)
    He promoted a hawkish foreign policy.
    He was defeated in his re-election bid (1962).
    He went to Southern China to care for the sick, but as a result, he suffered from malaria a total of 44 times.
    He warned of the militarism of Japan before Pearl Harbor was attacked.
    He sought to eliminate racial discrimination from immigration bills.
    He was a moderate on social issues and supported civil rights.
    He was named one of the ten most influential Congressmen in 1961, and was the sole Republican on this list.
    In 1981, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
    He is honored by conservatives for his aggressive anti-communism.
