Why he might be annoying
As an attorney, he specialized in defending Vegas' organized crime figures, such as Meyer Lansky, Frank Rosenthal and Tony Spilotro.
He was voted 'least effective public official' in a Las Vegas Review-Journal readers' poll (2003).
He suggested graffiti artists should have their thumbs amputated on television.
He said of a journalist, 'They should break her legs.'
He was a spokesperson for Bombay Sapphire Gin.
While speaking to a group of fourth grade students, he was asked what his hobbies were and named drinking gin as a favorite.
He tried repeatedly to poach other cities' sports teams, unsuccessfully wooing the Montreal Expos, Florida Marlins and San Diego Chargers.
Why he might not be annoying
The Washington Post wrote, 'He began to transform downtown Las Vegas from a wasteland of decayed buildings and drunken roughnecks into an urban playground of hipster bars and luxury shops.'
He donated the $100,000 Bombay Sapphire Gin paid him to charity.
He responded to criticism of his remarks to the fouth graders with, 'I'm the George Washington of mayors. I can't tell a lie. If they didn't want the answer, the kid shouldn't have asked the question.'
He appears at most events accompanied by two buxom showgirls. (Now there's a perk of office for you!)
He was a celebrity photographer for the Playboy Cyber Club (2001).
He was so popular in Las Vegas that when he was unable to run for office due to term limits, his wife was elected mayor on a platform of continuing his policies.
