Landmark cases include 'American Communications v. Douds (1950)' 'Sweatt v. Painter (1950),' 'McLaurin v. Oklahoma State Regents (1950)' and 'Dennis v. United States (1951)'

Why he might be annoying:

He owed much of his career to a life-long friendship with Harry S. Truman.
Truman tried to convince him to run for President.
He told Truman that if he seized the steel mills to avert a strike, the Supreme Court would support his decision. It didn't.
He inherited a court that was so fractured, that some justices were not on speaking terms.
His court stood by segregation when it was brought up twice (Sweatt v. Painter and McLaurin v. Oklahoma State Regents).
His death is considered a good thing by many legal historians. 'Brown v. Board of Education' was before his court at the time of his death and he had a history of supporting 'separate but equal.'
He waived the chance to review the death sentence of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was able to patch up many of the personal rivalries of the Supreme Court.
He fought during World War I.
He handled war-bond drives during World War II.
He served in all branches of his government during his lifetime.
He unexpectedly died of a heart attack at age 63 (September 8, 1953).
