The Resume

    (October 31, 1892-March 24, 1946)
    Born in Moscow, Russian Federation
    World Chess Champion (1927-35,1937-46)

Why he might be annoying:

He 'improved' the published results for several of his games.
During World War II, he wrote articles for German papers praising 'Aryan chess' and denigrating 'Jewish chess.'
His play and behavior became more erratic in his later years due to alcoholism.
During one exhibition, he reportedly responded to falling behind in a game by urinating on the board.

Why he might not be annoying:

He claimed that the anti-Semitic articles that appeared under his name had been forged by the Nazis.
He was good friends with several Jewish players and his fourth wife was Jewish.
During the Russian Civil War, he was arrested as a suspected spy and reported to have been executed (1919).
Although he officially died from either a heart attack or choking, his son hinted that he had been killed by the Soviets.
