The Resume

    (December 26, 1905-September 14, 1981)
Born in Nassau County, New York
Publisher of several New England newspapers, most notably the Manchester Union Leader of New Hampshire

Why he might be annoying:

He claimed to have been a reporter for the New York World -- eight years after the World had folded.
He had an affair with the woman who lent him the money to buy his first newspapers in Vermont.
He managed to alienate his parents, his siblings and his daughter.
He ran an anti-Henry Kissinger editorial with the headline 'Kissinger the Kike?'
He twice ran his baptismal certificate on the front pages to assure readers that he himself was not Jewish.
He was best known for publishing the forged 'Canuck letter' as part of Richard Nixon's 'dirty tricks' campaign against Edmund Muskie.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Teddy Roosevelt was his godfather.
    He was a staunch anti-Communist.
Thanks to the New Hampshire primary, he wielded a lot more power -- especially in conservative Republican circles -- than a medium-sized publisher normally would.
He created an anti-tax pledge that has been signed by every winner of the New Hampshire primary, in both parties.
