Why he might be annoying:

    His first attempt to reach the North Pole fell 174 miles (280 km) short (1906).
    Even today, scientists are still not sure if Peary actually reached the exact North Pole.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He proved Greenland was an island and not a continent.
    American explorer, Frederick Albert Cook, claimed to have discovered the North Pole five days earlier than Peary, however experts found Cook's claim to be false.
