    Also wrote 'No Man's Land' (1898), 'Prester John' (1910), 'The Power House' (1916), 'Mr. Standfast' (1919), 'Huntingtower' (1922), 'The Three Hostages' (1924), 'The Dancing Floor' (1926), 'Witch Wood' (1927), 'Castle Gray' (1930), 'The Gap in the Curtain' (1932), 'The House of the Four Winds' (1935) and 'The Island of Sheep' (1936)

Why he might be annoying:

    He passed the bar, but never practiced as an attorney.
    His books included references to 'fat Jews,' 'blue-black dagos' and 'niggers.'
    He got his title not for his literary works, but because King George V insisted that the Canadian Governor-general had to be a peer.

Why he might not be annoying:

    During World War I, he enlisted in the intelligence corps, eventually being named Director of Information (1917).
    He traveled throughout Canada, becoming the first governor-general to visit the Arctic regions.
    He denounced the Nazis and anti-semitism so forcefully that he was placed on a list of prominent Britons to be rounded up by the Germans if they invaded the UK.
    Time magazine wrote that he 'packed five noteworthy careers into his amazingly versatile life.'
