    Birth name was Demetrios Coucouzis
    Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America (1959-96)
    Famous for his active role in the American Civil Rights movement

Why he might be annoying:

    He endorsed Michael Dukakis' failed Presidential bid.
    He upset Greek immigrants, many of them traditionalists and nationalists, by encouraging greater use of English in the American Church's liturgy.
    He stepped down after several conflicts with a patriarch of Greek Orthodox Church in Constantinople (he resigned on his 85th birthday).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He vocally opposed the Vietnam War.
    As a child of a Greek family living on the then-Turkish territory of Imbros, he had first-hand experience with ethnic prejudice.
    He was criticized for his liberal stances on homosexuality and abortion rights.
    He marched alongside Martin Luther King during the famous 1965 March on Selma, making for a famous cover of Life Magazine alongside Dr. King.
    He met with every U.S. president from Dwight D. Eisenhower to Bill Clinton.
    He was the first Greek Orthodox archbishop to meet with a Roman Catholic Pope (John XXIII) in 350 years, in 1959.
