In 1994, during the World Cup final against Brazil, they again lost on penalty kicks.
Thirteen members of the 2006 line-up were investigated in a match-fixing scandal, involving players illegally gambling on games and the selection of favorable referees.
Defender Marco Materazzi admitted insulting Zinedine Zidane, resulting in the infamous final match head-butt during the 2006 World Cup.

The squad's name is derived from ‘azzurro' (sky blue), the color of their jerseys.
The 1949 line-up lost 10 of 11 members in an airplane crash.
