Producer
Born in House of Habsburg, Austria
AKA Lipizzaner, or The World-Famous Royal Lipizzan Stallions
Based at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria
Descendants of the Iberian horse breeds (including Spanish Andalusian)
Film credits include ‘Florian (1940)’ and ‘Miracle of the White Stallions (1963)’
They take their names from the Karst Plateau village of Lipica (or ‘Lipizza’ in Italian), Slovenia.
Despite the billing, ‘World Famous’ isn’t that much of a stretch.
A series of wars around the 19th century required the breeds to relocate each time. Not until 1815 would they be able to permanently return to Lipica.
Only horses from the Spanish Riding School are considered for touring.
When ‘Florian’ was filming, the producer’s wife was the only owner of any Lipizzans stateside.
Most Lipizzans are born with dark fur and become grey, rather than the true white (non-pigmented) fur commonly associated with them.
The name Lipica itself – previously Lippiza – is based on the Slovenian word ‘lipa,’ loosely meaning ‘linden tree’.
Within 30 minutes of birth, many a foal can physically stand by itself and take its first taste of mare’s milk.
At six months, a foal can become fully independent.
When the House of Habsburg came to rule both Spain and Austria, the need arose for a breed that was suited to both military warfare and fashionable riding schools.
With each passing war and relocation, another ground was found for them, enabling their expansion outside the Habsburg monarchy.
They popularized the ‘airs above the ground,’ an advanced form of classical training (or ‘dressage’) in which the horse actually jumps fully into the air.
They mature slowly and can live – and perform – for decades.
