    With Didion wrote the screenplays 'Panic in Needle Park' (1971), 'A Star Is Born' (1976), 'True Confessions' (1981) and 'Up Close & Personal' (1996)
    Wrote the novels 'Vegas: A Memoir of a Dark Season' (1974), 'True Confessions' (1977), 'Dutch Shea, Jr.' (1982), 'Harp' (1990), 'Playland' (1994) and 'Nothing Lost' (published posthumously, 2004)
    Also wrote 'The Studio' (1967), 'The Red, White and the Blue' (1987) and 'Monster: Living Off The Big Screen' (1997)
    Frequent contributor to the New York Review of Books
    During basic training in the Army, he lost his rifle.
    He was overshadowed as a writer by both his brother and his wife.
    He and Didion were called 'the First Family of Angst' by the Saturday Review.
    He covered the O.J. trial for the New York Review of Books while his brother was covering it for Vanity Fair.
    Although a non-practicing Catholic, he said 'On my deathbed, I hope there's a priest nearby to hedge my bet.'
    He began writing in childhood to express himself despite a severe stutter.
    He was known for his sardonic wit.
    He and Didion adopted a daughter.
    He did not mind being thought of as 'Mr. Joan Didion,' and often bragged about his wife's success.
    An interviewer wrote about him and Didion, 'For depressed people, they certainly laugh a lot.'
