Why he might be annoying:

He called Peter Hall 'a ball of rancid pig's fat rolled around the floor of a barber's shop.'
His ‘adult’ version of Alice in Wonderland received an X-Rating and was denounced by Lewis Carroll’s estate (although it has since been critically praised).
He was artistic director for both the Old Vic and the National Theatre, and would resign from both out of frustration over creative differences.
He referred to the Three Tenors (Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras ) as ‘Jurassic Park.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He originally studied to be a doctor and obtained a degree in medicine from London University.
He made his stage debut as a co-founder of the ‘Beyond the Fringe’ comedy revue, along with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, for which they received a Special Tony Award in 1963.
When he directed The Mikado, he opted to shift the setting to 1920s Britain sans the Yellowface (which proved a wise move contemporarily).
He was appointed CBE in 1983 and knighted in 2002 (he had to be talked into accepting the honors by his kids).
He said: ‘I don't think the world has treated me badly at all. I sometimes get reviewed spitefully by critics. But I don't think the world has treated me badly.’
He defended multiracial immigration to the United Kingdom during a spirited debate with Enoch Powell on The Dick Cavett Show.
