    He announced his candidacy for Congress two months after being appointed Chair of American Government at Central Michigan University, leading to complaints from faculty and students that he was using the job to subsidize his campaign.
    He reported a $15,000 stock purchase several months after the legal deadline established by a 2012 law intended to combat insider trading and increase transparency.
    Despite being a gun owner, he regularly receives 'F' ratings from the NRA.

Why he might not be annoying:

    As a member of the US Navy Reserve, he served in the Persian Gulf, supporting the no-fly zone in southern Iraq.
    He has made a tradition of an annual motorcycle tour of Michigan, covering over a thousand miles from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula and back.
    His first wife Heidi underwent an emergency abortion after her water broke in only the fourth month of her pregnancy, resulting in the death of the fetus, and she was unable to miscarry naturally.
    He was the first sitting US Senator to go public about a personal experience with abortion (2020), noting, 'It's important for folks to realize these things happen every day.'
