She married and divorced journalist Patrick Bishop twice.
Muammar Gaddafi hit on her when she interviewed him.
Ironically, her last post to her Facebook page expressed her shock at the death in Syria of reporter Anthony Shadid.
When her editor told her it was too dangerous to remain in Syria, she replied that she needed to stay another day to finish one last story.
She focused on how war affected civilians, saying 'These are people who have no voice. I feel I have a moral responsibility towards them, that it would be cowardly to ignore them.'
A British Press Awards judge said of her escape over an icy mountain path from Chechnya to Georgia, 'It was one of the great adventure stories of all time. They should make it into a film.'
