The Resume

    Born in Rota, Spain
    Author of 'American Dirt' (2020)
Also wrote the books 'The Outside Boy (2010)' and 'The Crooked Branch (2013)'

Why she might be annoying:

She was accused of misrepresenting and re-shifting her ethnic background.
She was accused of promoting a stereotypical portrait of Mexican immigrants in her book.
Her book roll-out party included barbed wire centerpieces, which some called distasteful.
The backlash got to be so bad that her publisher canceled the American Dirt book tour mid-way through its run.
Her book generated further controversy after it was selected for Oprah's book club, leading many in the Latinx community to openly oppose its selection.
She was accused of misleading people about her authenticity with claims of having a husband who is an undocumented immigrant (he emigrated from Ireland).

Why she might not be annoying:

She has been a foster parent.
She turned down a movie offer for her first book.
She identifies as white, but is part-Puerto Rican and part-Lebanese.
Her father was stationed as a member of the US Navy in Spain (where she was born).
She looks like Jean Louisa Kelly.
She gives talks about victims' rights based on her family's experience with the criminal justice system.
'American Dirt' debuted on the New York Times best sellers list at #1, where it stayed for nearly a month.
She admitted to worrying that 'as a non-migrant and non-Mexican, I had no business writing a book set almost entirely in Mexico, set entirely among migrants. I wished someone slightly browner than me would write it.'
