Religious Figure
    (circa 340-September 30, 420)
Born in Strido, Dalmatia (modern Croatia)
Birth name is Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus
    Church Father (theologian/writer)
Symbols include books, writing materials, a red hat, a skull, a trumpet, a lion and an owl
Patron saint of students, librarians, archaeologists and translators
Feast Day is September 30 (Catholic and Lutheran) and June 15 (Eastern Orthodox)
He did not commit himself to a Christian life until well into adulthood.
He was arrogant and made many enemies.
He described Hebrew as ‘this language of hissing and broken-winded words.’
He preached celibacy yet raised eyebrows with his large circle of female friends.
Angered by his writings, several rioters set fire to the monastery he was living in.
He spent his last 34 years as an anchorite (religious hermit) with only a skull to keep him company.
Originally buried in Bethlehem, the fate of his remains in later years is uncertain.
In a popular medieval story, he removes a thorn from a lion’s paw.
A vision he had when ill convinced him to devote himself to God and biblical study.
He was the first major Christian scholar to learn Hebrew and study Jewish scriptural commentary.
He enjoyed the company of intelligent and well read women.
Rumors of inappropriate conduct with his female friends may have been started by jealous rivals.
His Latin translation of the Bible (the Vulgate) became the official scripture of the Catholic Church.
Next to St. Augustine, he was the most important early Christian scholar.
