He made war upon other Muslims, even though Islamic law forbids this.
His birth place is the same as that of Saddam Hussein.
He went by a single name.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was respected by both the Europeans and the Arabs because he was an honorable leader.
When news of his nephew's death reached him, he cried in public before his aides and guards, an unheard-of thing for a sultan.
If his servants pointed out his errors, he would not punish them (as was often the case with other monarchs) but admit his mistake and correct his faults.
He was known to be an engaging speaker.
Even though he recaptured Jerusalem, he made an agreement with King Richard the Lionheart that Christians would be able to visit the holy city.
