    Explorer/conservationist

Why he might be annoying:

    His middle name is McGill.
    He named his dog ‘Mutt.’
He also owned a rattlesnake, a squirrel, some owls, hundreds of insects, and a… gator!
When he learned that the family sheepdog in ‘For Better or for Worse’ was named for him, he requested a strip from its creator, which he hung above his toilet ‘so the men would read it.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He wrote for adult and child alike, mainly in autobiographic style.
‘People of the Deer’ inspired the Canadian government to acknowledge the existence of the Inuit.
While considered largely fictitious, ‘Never Cry Wolf’ – made into a 1983 film – was instrumental in changing attitudes toward the lupine species.
An ice-class research vessel was renamed for him.
