Musician

The Resume

    (December 8, 1939- )
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
    Flute player
Performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Sadler Wells Opera, Convent Garden Opera, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
    Sold 30 million albums
Soloist on the 'Lord of the Rings' soundtrack
    Knighted (2001)

Why he might be annoying:

He is nicknamed 'the man with the golden flute.'
While a member of the Berlin Philharmonic, he wore pink see-through shirts.
Early in his solo career, he said he would not record 'pops' or crossover records.
Since then, he has recorded albums of movie themes, collaborated with the Chieftains, and covered everything from 'Danny Boy' to 'The Wind Beneath My Wings.'
He covered John Denver's tune 'Annie's Song' as a tribute to his second wife, Anna, only to divorce her a few years later. (Come to think of it, Denver dumped his Annie as well -- maybe the problem is with the danged song.)

Why he might not be annoying:

Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson is his only serious competition for the title of world's most famous flute player.
He has the eye condition nystagmus (involuntary eye movements that result in reduced vision) and is the patron of the Nystagmus Network.
He was a founding member of the Music Education Consortium to lobby the British government to provide better music education in schools.
He broke both legs and his left arm when he was knocked down by a speeding motorcyclist (August, 1977).
He said about his repertoire, 'I don't want to play things the public is not interested in hearing.'
