Why he might be annoying:

'Last of the Summer Wine' co-star Tom Owen said, 'He could be a rude old devil, although he'd probably claim that was just his acerbic wit.'
When first approached about the Wallace and Gromit shorts, he told animator Nick Park to use someone else.
He admitted to not sharing Wallace's fondness for cheese: 'I haven't touched the stuff for decades.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He served as a radio operator with the RAF during WWII.
He came alarmingly close to drowning filming a scene for 'Last of the Summer Wine' when the canoe he was in capsized.
He continued acting despite suffering macular degeneration, an eye disease causing a loss of central vision.
