In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty
dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a
jury, shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States, than
according to the rules of the common law.
Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, spoke of the British crown 'depriving us of the benefit of trial by jury.'
Why Amendment VII - Civil Suits might be annoying
There are way too many frivolous law suits.
$20 was a lot of money back in the 1700s.
A jury can be stacked unfairly.
Because of this, we are stuck on jury duty.
Civilian juries are not always able to grasp the complex issues of a trial.
Judges have the right to overturn or modify jury decisions.
Why Amendment VII - Civil Suits might not be annoying
Americans have the right to sue.
The founding fathers believed that trial by jury is pure democracy.
It allows for ordinary people to decide cases, rather than appointed bureaucrats.
