Astronomical Object
    Discovered in 1867
Orbits out of the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter
    Orbit is 5.5 years.
9 miles long and 3.7 miles across (half the size of Manhattan
Nasa's Deep Impact space probe impacted into it (July 4, 2005 - 1:52 AM EDT)
Deep Impact was launched from Florida (January 12, 2005)
Photographed by Hubble telescope (June 14, 2005)
    The project costs $333 million.
People in the Northeastern U.S. were unable to view the collision.
When Deep Impact went through the comet, it made a gapping hole. Other comets are making fun of it.
    Comets are old and cold.
Deep Impact had to split in two, one part 'impactor' went into the comet, the other part got the hell out of there and photograph it.
It could unlock the origins of the universe.
It is the first comet to be struck by something manmade.
It will teach us the dynamics of a comet and what would happen if one were to collide with Earth.
It gave us the first view of what is inside of a comet.
We may learn why comets display frequent outbursts of activity.
    What we learned:
    Comets formed slower than thought
    Comets have craters
There is a higher ratio of dust to ice than previously thought
Comets are softer than what we expected
