Football Player
After succeeding legendary coach Eddie Robinson at his alma mater (Grambling), he left to work in the front office for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after just 6 seasons.
Ironically, he left the Bucs during his playing days due to a contract dispute.
He had a losing record as an NFL starting quarterback.
He is known more for one game than the body of his career.
He is the first African-American quarterback to win the Super Bowl, trashing the Denver Broncos, 42-10. He won the MVP, throwing for 340 yards and 4 touchdowns.
He led the Redskins to 35 points in the second quarter of the game, which established an NFL postseason mark for most points in a period.
Many of today's African-American quarterbacks have said that when he led the Redskins to victory in Super Bowl XXII, they knew their dreams could be realized.
Although race questions frequently came up at media day, he was NOT asked ‘How long have you been a black quarterback?'
His winning percentage as head coach at Grambling was .743 (52-18).
His #17 Redskins throwback jersey is very popular.
He was the first All-American quarterback from a historically black college and became the first black quarterback ever drafted in the first round in 1978 draft.
He led a woeful Bucs team to three playoff appearances, and the 1979 NFC championship game.
