    (January 26, 1884-March 11, 1960)
    Born in Beloit, Wisconsin
    Explorer, adventurer and naturalist
    President of the Explorers Club (1931-34)
    Director of the American Museum of Natural History (1934-42)
    Best known for leading five fossil hunting expeditions to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia (1920-30)
    Discovered the dinosaur species Protoceratops, Oviraptor and Velociraptor
    Wrote 'Whale Hunting with Gun and Camera' (1916), 'Across Mongolian Plains' (1921), 'Ends of the Earth' (1929), 'The New Conquest of Central Asia' (1932), 'This Business of Exploring' (1935), 'This Amazing Planet' (1939), 'An Explorer Comes Home' (1947) and 'All About Dinosaurs' (1953)
    His Gobi expeditions were intended to find the origins of man, which did not quite pan out since he was on the wrong continent for that.
    He accidentally shot himself in the leg while unholstering his revolver (1928).
    He is often credited as the inspiration for Indiana Jones even though his name never appears in 120 pages of story conferences involving George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg.
    He paid his way through college with money he earned from his hobby of taxidermy.
    The started at the American Museum of Natural History as a janitor (the only job available when he applied) and rose to director of the institution.
    His expedition discovered the first dinosaur eggs (1923).
    During WWII, he advised George S. Patton on desert warfare.
    He wrote, 'Always there has been adventure just around the corner -- and the world is full of corners.'
