    After being nominated for Surgeon General, she was quickly criticized for being overweight.
    She served as an advisor for Burger King, further raising health credibility questions.
    She once applied to Yale Law School despite not having an undergraduate degree.
    She was Obama's second choice for Surgeon General, after Sanjay Gupta declined the nomination.
    She was the first African-American woman elected to the American Medical Association's board of trustees.
    As a doctor, she practiced medicine in rural areas where the majority of residents fell below the poverty line.
    The New Orleans area clinic she had been working in was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
    The clinic was supposed to re-open, but was destroyed by fire, so she treated patients at their homes.
    She received a great deal of recognition and numerous awards for her work.
