    Locksmith and toolmaker
    Founded the German Workers Party (January 5, 1919), which evolved into the National Socialist German Worker's Party
    With Adolf Hitler and Gottfried Feder drew up the 25 points of the Nazi Party manifesto
    Replaced as chairman of the Nazi Party by Adolf Hitler (1921)
    Left the Nazi Party (1923)
    Served as Vice-President of the Bavarian state government (1924-28)
    Rejoined the Nazi Party after Hitler became Chancellor (1933)
    He claimed Germany lost World War I because of a Jewish-Masonic conspiracy.
    He wrote, 'We fight the Jew as the racial tuberculosis of the nations and are convinced that a recovery will take place only after he has been eliminated.'
    Hitler's assessments of him included, 'As a speaker, not very gifted' and 'His whole being was weak and uncertain.'
    He greatly underestimated Hitler, calling him 'an absurd little man.'
    He was fired from a job as a machinist for refusing to accept the Social Democrat Party as the sole workers' representative (1917).
    He reportedly disapproved of street fighting by the Brown Shirts and other violence by the Nazis.
    He was kept in the dark about Nazi plans to overthrow the Bavarian government in the Beer Hall Putsch (1923), learning about it by accident when he bumped into two Nazis on a bus on the night of the coup attempt.
