    He campaigns against smoking bans in the U.S. and U.K.
    His first band was named Arms and Legs.
    He made three albums with the Joe Jackson Band in two years (1979-80), dissolved the band, then recorded a fourth album with them 23 years later.
    In 1981, he recorded the swing tinged album 'Jumpin' Jive,' about 15 years before Brian Setzer rekindled the genre.
    He said in a 2003 magazine interview that New York City had become 'a joyless place - a city for rich people and tourists. It's really lost it's edge.'
    He was a sickly child who suffered asthma attacks from age three into his 20s.
    His favorite musician is Ludwig Van Beethoven, whom he calls the 'Shakespeare of music.'
    He says of Beethoven, 'He did it all. Everything's there. Tragedy. Drama. Sense of humor. Fun. Beauty. Quietness. Loudness. Everything.'
    Besides an accomplished pianist he knows accordion, violin, harmonica, mellotron, xylophone and percussion.
    He has recorded in styles ranging from rock, pop, jazz, R&B, swing, reggae, salsa and full symphonies.
    His 1999 album 'Symphony No. 1' earned him a Grammy.
