    Renowned for her photographic portraits and allegorical tableaux
    Her childhood nickname was 'Talent.'
    She and her arty sisters were known as the 'Pattledom.'
    She did not take up photography until she was 48.
    Her innovative soft focus effect was initially a technical error.
    She became snappish with her photographic subjects if they grew restless.
    She virtually abandoned photography after moving to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 1875.
    Growing up, she was regarded as plain by her good looking family.
    She took up photography as a way to cope with her husband's frequent overseas absences.
    She was a mostly self taught photographer.
    She turned her chicken shed into a studio and her coal house into a darkroom.
    She thought photography could be artistic as well as documentary in nature.
    The Annie Leibovitz of her day, her famous subjects included Charles Darwin, Ellen Terry and Lord Alfred Tennyson.
    She was the great aunt of Virginia Woolf.
