    He had his mother arrested when she refused to back his claim to the throne.
    As king, he was unable to reign in powerful earls who weakened the throne’s power.
    He refused to consummate his marriage for religious reasons.
    He died without an heir, paving the way for several divisive claims to the throne.
    Just months after his death, England fell to Norman invaders led by William the Conqueror.
    As a child he was sent into exile by his mother when she married a Danish king.
    His stepfather killed one brother, and his stepbrother blinded another.
    He was a popular king who brought peace and economic development.
    He established a single law code for all of England.
    He was England’s last important Anglo-Saxon king.
    He founded Westminster Abbey (where his remains were found under the floor in 2005).
