Religious Figure
    ( -circa 251)
    Born in Canaan
Usually depicted crossing a stream with the Christ child on his shoulder
Feast day is July 25 (Catholic) and March 9 (Orthodox)
Patron saint of travelers and truckers
Many exceptionally fantastic legends sprang up around around him.
In one he was a heathen king’s giant son who initially served Satan.
In another he was a cannibal warrior with the head of a dog.
He has no known burial site.
He was removed from the saint's calendar in 1969 (veneration is still allowed).
He is usually depicted as a robust, powerful man.
He was best known for carrying travelers across a dangerous river.
One of these travelers was the Christ child (who was extremely heavy as he carried the world’s sin).
After safely ferrying Christ, Christopher's staff was transformed into a flowering tree.
Angered by his conversions, the Roman Emperor Decius ordered him tortured and beheaded.
To this day, many travelers carry St. Christopher medallions for safety.
Tom Waits wrote a song about him called ‘Hang on St. Christopher.’
