Why they might be annoying:

The name Styx is 'the river of the damned' in Greek mythology.
Curulewski quit just prior to them becoming famous.
    John Panozzo was an alcoholic.
'Mr. Roboto' was used in a commercial by an auto maker.
Shaw quit after a spat with DeYoung (1984). Shaw moved on to Ted Nugent's 'Damn Yankees.'
Styx disbanded, reunited in 1989 and disbanded again.
They reunited in 1996, put out a greatest hits album but the Panozzo brothers were too ill to tour.
They recorded their first new album in nine years but DeYoung contracted influenza (with sensitivity to heat and light), and could not tour (1998).
When DeYoung tried to rejoin the group sixteen months later they voted him out.

Why they might not be annoying:

They performed at schools for free, to gain exposure.
Curulewski died of a brain aneurysm (1988).
'Show Me the Way' was used as the Gulf War anthem.
John Panozzo died of hemorrhaging from chronic alcoholism (July 16, 1996).
When 'South Park's' Cartman sang 'Come Sail Away' in the 'Who Is Cartman's Father' episode, Styx regained popularity. They've been touring since (1998).
Chuck Panazzo admits he is gay and verified he's had AIDS since 1990 (July 27, 2001).
