Why he might be annoying:

He started out as a Freudian psychoanalyst.
He was an atheist who considered religion a danger to mental health.
He is considered one of the founders of the sexual revolution, promoting very liberal sexual ethics which he based on the now disputed research of Alfred Kinsey.

He left psychoanalysis, finding it unscientific.
He had an awesome work ethic; working sixteen hour days, seeing up to sixty patients a week, not including four group therapy sessions, and holding up to 200 talks and workshops a year well into his nineties.
His REBT therapy has helped a lot of people.
