    (February 1, 1967-1976)
    Consisted of 7-11 teams
    Champions were:
    Pittsburgh Pipers (1968)
    Oakland Oaks (1969)
    Indiana Pacers (1970, 72, 73)
    Utah Stars (1971)
    New York Nets (1974, 76)
    Kentucky Colonels (1975)
It lacked a national television contract through its existence.
Many of its teams had financial difficulties and attendance problems.
Many think it was the first league to use the three-point line, but it actually took the idea from the short-lived American Basketball League.
Unlike the NBA, it had no foul-out rule.
A minor league known for its chaotic over-expansion stole its name.
When the ABA was absorbed by the NBA, three of its seven teams were disbanded.
Their multi-colored basketball was referred to as a 'beach ball.'
It was famous for the huge fros many of its players had.
It was famed for its red, white and blue basketball (as opposed to brown).
Their first commissioner was NBA great George Mikan (who came up with the idea for the multi-colored ball).
It had a more wide-open and fast-paced style of play than the NBA did at the time.
ABA teams won a slight majority of the exhibition games played against NBA teams (79-76).
The NBA adopted its three-point shot and its slam dunk contest.
Basketball greats Julius Erving, Moses Malone and George Gervin made their name in the ABA.
Four former ABA teams (the New York/New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs) joined the NBA and still exist to this day.
