Won 50 NASCAR races as a driver (1953-66)
Won six Winston Cup titles as an owner (1976-78,1981-82,1985)
Inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame (1991)

Why he might be annoying:

He learned to drive fast while bootlegging moonshine for his dad.
At the time, he did not have a driver's license. ('I didn't need one. I wasn't going to stop anyway.')
His NASCAR career was interrupted when he was busted while tending his dad's still and served 11 months in federal prison (1957).
He markets 'legal moonshine,' country ham and fried pork rinds.

Why he might not be annoying:

He introduced the technique of drafting to NASCAR races at the 1960 Daytona 500.
He was the first NASCAR owner to install two-way radios so the driver could communicate with the crew.
Sports Illustrated named him the greatest driver of NASCAR's first half-century (1998).
He received a pardon from Ronald Reagan for his moonshining conviction (1986).
He gained prominence outside the world of NASCAR when Tom Wolfe wrote an article for Esquire dubbing him 'The Last American Hero.' (1965)
