The Resume

    (August 1, 1995- )
    Born in Oakland, Ohio
    Brock Allen Turner
Stanford University freshman (later withdrew before being banned from campus)
Graduate of Oakwood High School, Class of 2014
Former aspiring Olympic athlete; three-time All-American swimmer
Caught in the act of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman behind a dumpster; arrested after attempting to abandon the victim and flee the pursuit of two graduate students (January 18, 2015)
Convicted of three charges of felony sexual assault (Mar. 30, 2016); later sentenced to six months in the Santa Clara county jail (Jun. 2, 2016)
Sentence sparked national controversy and heated debate over social inequity in the justice system (prosecutors recommended a sentence of at least six years)
Widespread outrage on social media led to calls for a recall of the presiding case officiate Judge Aaron Persky

Why he might be annoying:

For some reason, the Santa Clara police department took an unusual six months to release his mug shot to the public.
Prosecutors accused him of lying about never partying or taking drugs before his enrollment at Stanford.
Prior to the rape incident, he had been detained after attempting to use a fake driver's license to illegally purchase alcohol.
He reportedly attempted to kiss and grope the rape victim’s sister before the sexual assault occurred.
He offered the predictable defense that his victim had been drinking and allegedly gave consent to sex, implying that she 'brought the rape on herself.'
More than 250 students signed a letter submitted to Persky before Turner’s sentencing, asking that he be held accountable for his actions.
The judge ruled for a minimum sentence because he believed 'a prison sentence would have a severe impact' on him.
A letter read by Turner's 'Emily Doe' victim read in court, describing the emotional toll the ordeal took on her in almost sickening detail, went viral when it was released by BuzzFeed (Jun. 3, 2016).
His father unintentionally provoked greater outrage after his letter to the judge was released, in which he downplayed his son's actions and claimed jail would be 'a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action.'
USA Swimming released multiple statements banning him from taking part in competitive swimming per their zero tolerance for sexual misconduct.
Many who criticized the decision argued that an underprivileged black male convicted for the same (or a lesser) offense would get the book thrown at him.

Why he might not be annoying:

He threw away a very promising career in professional swimming with a series of crappy life choices.
His victim acknowledged that their lives were intertwined in the sense that both were now ruined, albeit in different ways.
His father attested to his being so depressed that he lost interest in his favorite foods (including rib-eye steaks and pretzels).
The viral outrage resulted in liberal opportunists like Lena Dunham and even Vice President Joe Biden injecting themselves into the narrative where they had no business doing so.
A former classmate of his defended his character in a controversial letter, writing: 'This is completely different from a woman getting kidnapped and raped as she is walking to her car in a parking lot...These are idiot boys and girls having too much to drink and not being aware of their surroundings and having clouded judgment.'
He has been widely labeled 'a rapist' despite the fact that the two formal charges of rape, under California state law, had already been dropped at the preliminary hearing (DNA testing, which revealed no genetic evidence of vaginal penetration).
