    Playwright, novelist, poet and convict
    Wrote novels 'Our Lady of the Flowers' (1943) and 'The Thief's Journal' (1949)
    Wrote plays 'The Maids' (1947), 'The Balcony' (1956) and 'The Screens' (1961)

Why he might be annoying:

    His writing glorified violent crime.
    He supported himself as a prostitute during his twenties.
    He spent much of his adult life in and out of jail, usually for petty thievery.
    He stole jewelry from his patrons at literary events.
    He befriended the Black Panthers and PLO members in the 1960s.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His mother, an unmarried prostitute, gave him up when he was a baby.
    He was kicked out of the French foreign legion because of his affairs with men.
    Jean-Paul Sartre and other well-connected friends saved him from a life sentence (and he stayed out of jail for good afterwards).
    He spoke against the mistreatment of immigrants and police brutality.
    He was lionized by the upper class elite he scorned.
