He became a compulsive gambler after relocating to Las Vegas.
He was forced to play birthday parties, bar mitzvahs and hotel lounges when money ran short.

Why he might not be annoying:

He invented the mambo, adding African rhythms to Cuban sounds.
Many considered him one of the most important bassists in 20th century popular music.
He had a star on the Walk of Fame.
His work received renewed interest thanks to Andy Garcia.
