Economist
    (April 21, 1864-June 14, 1920)
    Born in Erfurt, Germany
    Sociologist and economist
Wrote 'The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism' (1905), 'The Religion of China: Confucianism and Taoism' (1915), 'The Religion of India: The Sociology of Hinduism and Buddhism' (1917), 'Ancient Judaism' (1919), 'Politics as a Vocation' (1919) and 'Economy and Society' (published posthumously, 1922)
He quit as professor of economics at Heidelberg after developing severe insomnia and a subsequent nervous breakdown.
During World War I, he served on a commission that tried to negotiate an armistice that would leave Germany in control of Belgium and Poland (1916).
As a drafter of the Constitution of Germany's Weimar Republic, he argued for inserting Article 48, allowing the President to undertake 'emergency measures' without parliamentary approval, which Hitler would later exploit to establish a dictatorship.
He was named a full professor just one year after his initial appointment.
He defended Jews, women and leftists against persecution in academia.
He is considered one of the founders of modern sociology for his studies of the influence of religion on economics and government.
