Religious Figure
    (circa 1246-circa August 1255)
Born in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
    Disappeared on July 31
Body found in a well a month later
    Patron saint of torture victims
Represented as a bound child kneeling before Mary
    Feast day formerly July 27
A Jewish neighbor, Kopin, was threatened with torture and confessed to crucifying him.
Henry III got involved and 90 other Jews were charged, 18 of whom were executed.
Henry’s persecution was probably an excuse to seize Jewish property.
Hugh’s legend is the most notorious of the blood libels directed at Jewish communities in the Middle Ages and later.
He is often confused with the adult Saint Hugh of Lincoln, who was popular with Jews.
He was an innocent pawn in the anti-Semitic scheming of adults.
He is one of the youngest saints ever canonized.
He inspired Geoffrey Chaucer’s ‘The Prioress’ Tale.’
The Vatican later suppressed his cult and no longer recognizes his feast day.
The Anglican church placed a plaque at his former shrine apologizing for the persecution his legend caused.
