    (1941- )
    Born in Brooklyn, New York
    Birth name was Alice May
Alice of the Arlo Guthrie song ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ (1967)
Cameo appearance in the film ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ (1969)
Operated the restaurants The Back Room (1965-66), Take-Out Alice (1969-73) and Alice’s at Avaloch (1975-79)
Wrote ‘The Alice’s Restaurant Cookbook’ (1969) and ‘My Life as a Restaurant’ (1976)
Illustrated Arlo Guthrie’s children’s book ‘Mooses Come Walking’ (2004)
She allowed a lot of refuse to accumulate in the converted church where she and her husband lived, eventually leading to Arlo hauling off the trash and getting busted for illegally dumping it.
She had never planned to open a restaurant, but did so at the urging of her mother, who saw it as a chance for her to become financially independent.
Many of the recipes in her cookbook were never actually served at any of her restaurants, but were made up by her and her mother to fill out the book as the publishing deadline approached. (‘Everybody talks about the chili, but I’ve never actually made it. It’s an imaginary recipe.’)
She said that the ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ movie ‘misrepresented me, embarrassed me, and made me into an object.’
She paid Arlo’s bail to spring him from jail after his littering arrest.
The movie ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ falsely claimed that she and Arlo had an affair.
After leaving the restaurant business, she became an artist.
She said, ‘Though I am now thought of as a symbol of the Sixties, let’s face it, those were exciting times and most people have great memories of the era.’
