Why he might be annoying:

    He was going bald.
He seemed contrarian, always opposing the government in power.
    He was a 'confirmed bachelor.'
The cover up for his disappearance purportedly caused the killings of 2 airline pilots, American Gerald Murphy and Dominican Octavio De La Maza.

Why he might not be annoying:

His explosive doctoral thesis on the corrupt Trujillo dictatorship may have led to his demise.
He feared for his life, but no legal action was taken despite his supposed work as a FBI snitch.
Murphy unwittingly flew a 'patient,' Galindez, to the Dominican Republic, but soon disappeared himself.
De la Maza was set up to take the fall as Murphy's killer, but refused, and was found hanged in his jail cell.
Antonio De la Maza avenged his brother Octavio's death, uttering, 'This hawk won’t kill any more chickens,' before shooting Trujillo in the face.
