Why he might be annoying:

He was born in Hawaii, yet he entered politics in Illinois.
He claims to have registered over 100,000 voters for Bill Clinton's presidential campaign, a number which is probably exaggerated.
He admitted to trying marijuana and cocaine.
He had an easy Senate campaign, running in a Democratic-leaning state with his Republican challenger Jack Ryan dropping out early due to alleged sex club romps.
He spent more time campaigning for other candidates on the Democratic ticket in Illinois than actually running for his own seat.
He is a distant descendant of Jefferson Davis.

Why he might not be annoying:

He became the third black U.S. Senator in 150 years (2004).
His victory in his Illinois Senate race was one of the few Democratic victories of the 2004 elections.
He skyrocketed to national prominence in a short period of time.
He is humble, describing himself as 'a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too.'
While serving in the Illinois State Senate, the Chicago Tribune called him 'one of the General Assembly's most impressive members.'
His first name means 'one who is blessed by God' in Swahili.
He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard.
He was the first black president of the Harvard Law Review.
His victory in the Senate race was widely reported all over the world.
He has been compared to former senator Paul Simon.
He has been described as highly intelligent and very charismatic.
