Why he might be annoying:

As a teenager, he made his own gorillas costume that he would wear to drive-ins showing 'Planet of the Apes,' then sneak up on people watching the movie to scare the bejeezus out of them.
He also built fake body parts in his family's kitchen.
    He wears a ponytail.
He said that after his first Oscar win he got hate mail: 'In a lot of people's minds, what I did wasn't makeup.... A lot of the straight-makeup people could see right away that they weren't going to be winning these awards because of the flashier stuff we do.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He said, 'I can't tell you how many people would say to me as a teenager, 'Why don't you grow up and start thinking about getting a real job?'
He won the first competitive Oscar for makeup, followed by (as of 2010) five more.
He said of fellow makeup legend Jack Pierce's work on Frankenstein, 'If I ever did something that iconic, I'd die happy.'
He said the 'most famous' he ever felt was when he was featured in the fanzine 'Famous Monsters of Filmland.'
