U.S. Governor

The Resume

    (November 29, 1876-December 19, 1977)
    Born in Andrew County, Missouri
    Governor of Wyoming (1925-27)
First female governor in the US
Also first woman appointed director of the US Mint (1933-53)
    Democrat

Why she might be annoying:

She won a special election called to replace her husband, William Ross, who had died in office.
She was actually elected on the same day as Miriam 'Ma' Ferguson, but beat her as first female governor because Wyoming's inauguration was held two weeks ahead of Texas's.
    She supported prohibition.
She was defeated for re-election, partly because she refused to actively campaign.
Despite her pioneering status, she declared, 'I have no interest in women's lib.'

Why she might not be annoying:

When she was seven, her family relocated to Kansas after their house burned down.
She was a former kindergarten teacher.
One of her sons died at the age of ten months when his perambulator tipped over and another son died in a car crash at 25.
As governor, she promoted tax cuts, banking reforms and laws protecting children, female workers and miners.
During the 1928 Democratic Convention, she received 31 votes for vice-president.
