The Resume

    (September 27, 1927-May 4, 2011)
    Born in Des Moines, Iowa
Portrayed Kate Lawrence in 'Family' (1976-80)
Appeared in the films 'Desperate Characters' (1971), 'The Pursuit of Happiness' (1971) and 'Pollock' (2000)
Appeared on Broadway in 'Twigs' (1971), 'Saturday Sunday Monday' (1974) and 'Any Given Day' (1993)

Why she might be annoying:

Her father was the editor of 'Turkey World,' a poultry journal. (Not all that annoying, but after finding that factoid, I had to include it somewhere in the profile.)
She was intially cast as next-door neighbor Irene Lorenzo in All in the Family but was replaced by Betty Garrett after she and producer Norman Lear clashed over how the character should be played.
    She was typecast as mothers.
She complained about 'Family,' 'I get bugged by little bitty scenes where I just have to stand around looking maternal.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She and Donald Stewart were married for 61 years until her death.
An anonymous 'All in the Family' staffer claimed the problem was, 'Sada had too much genuine class and couldn't yell enough for a Norman Lear show.'
She won a Tony for 'Twigs' and an Emmy for 'Family.'
'Family' co-star James Broderick said, 'Sada is about as close as we get in this country to British superactresses like Dame Edith Evans and Dame May Whitty. I'm sure if Sada lived in England, the Queen would have dubbed her Dame Sada a long time ago.'
