He covered a surprisingly large number of songs, mostly classic R&B.

Despite releasing a ‘singles’ collection, ‘Every Time You Go Away’ was his only major success story in North America.
His voice was constantly plagued by throat conditions, which came to a head in the 90s.

Before making his way up to frontman, he had a successful tenure as a backing musician.
He had a sizable collection of original compositions.
He was well-known for remaking material that would otherwise have been lost in time.
In the (live) clip for ‘I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down,’ he worked his microphone stand as easily as a twirling baton.
He delivered the opening line for the original ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas.’
He met his future wife while shooting the video for ‘Come Back and Stay.’ They had three children (the last born in 1996).
‘Then There’s You,’ a single from his 1997 self-titled CD, was covered by The Wilkinsons.
