The Resume

    (February 18, 1848-January 17, 1933)
Born in New York, New York
Stained glass designer and namesake for the Tiffany lamp
Son of Charles Lewis Tiffany (Tiffany & Co.)
Attended Eagleswood Military Academy and the National Academy of Design
Established the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation (1918)

Why he might be annoying:

He was not initially interested in entering the family jewelry and silverware business.
Following the First World War, his designs entered a four-decade period of obscurity.
Though his glass-making style was initially called ‘fabrile’ (Old English for ‘handcrafted’), he changed the term to ‘Favrile’ – eventually a registered trademark – because he thought it had a better ring.
His studio filed for bankruptcy the year before his death, followed six years later by a liquidation and the wrecking ball.

Why he might not be annoying:

He survived both of his wives, each of whom bore him four children.
A frequent visitor to Paris, and fluent in French, he would spend a year there studying art.
He was heavily inspired by the irregular shapes and effects of the glass blown by his associates (sinuous colored filaments).
At his first glass factory, founded in 1892, he established his signature glass-making style (embedding color into molten glass to make the tint permanent). Two years later, he received a patent for the glass, which won the grand prize at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair.
He became design director of his father’s firm upon the elder Tiffany’s death in 1902.
