Ebsen a conservative, who did not approve of Kulp's liberal stances made commercials supporting her opponent and helping him win (1984).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was cast as the Tin Man in 'The Wizard of Oz,' but was hospitalized by inhaling the aluminum powder makeup.
His appeal is that of a down to earth fatherly type.
