    Defensive back for the New York Titans (1962)
    Assistant coach for Michigan State, University of Iowa, USC and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    Head coach of the Detroit Lions (1989-96)
    Associated Press Coach of the Year (1991)
    His pro playing career lasted only one season before he injured his Achilles tendon.
    He pled guilty to driving while intoxicated (1987)
    His teams were often seen as underachieving.
    He set the record for most losses by a Lions coach, 71.
    After being let go by the Lions, he called William Clay Ford 'the best owner in the National Football League,' then turned around and sued him.
    He set the record for most wins by a Lions coach, 67.
    He was well liked by his players, who had a knack of coming through with a winning streak when he was on the verge of being fired.
    He good naturedly joked with the media about his often precarious job situation.
    Barry Sanders credited Fontes with making him into a star and singled out Fontes for thanks during his Hall of Fame acceptance speech.
